RightFax 9.0 Board Server Module does not start with error 1052

“Error 1052″ while trying to start the RightFax 9.0 board server module service in EFM, this is the most common error you would encounter with RightFax board server on a windows 2003 server using Brooktrout TR114+P4L.

This is because windows 2003 server comes with a copy of BFAX.SYS which is the default driver for brooktrout fax card. However, for the RightFax to work you need to install the driver that comes with the RightFax CDs.

As soon as you insert the card and restart the server, windows will detect the new hardware and if you select the continue it will install the driver from its database using the BFAX.SYS file that comes with windows.

In case you are encountering this issue, you need to first disable the BFAX.SYS driver that windows has used and install the RightFax board driver.

To disable windows copy of BFAX.SYS and install the RightFax board driver follow the below steps:

Right click MY COMPUTER and select manage
Browse to the DEVICE MANAGER, and in the view menu select ADVANCE
In the PLUG & PLAY section of the device manager, locate the BFAX.SYS and disable it.
Delete the Windows Registry value “Boardinit” from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\RightFax\BoardServer.
Rename the bfax.inf and the bfax.pnf files located in the Windows\inf folder to bfax.old and bfax.old2.
Open Device Manager, right-click on the Brooktrout board(s), and then select Uninstall.
Delete the Windows Registry value “BFax” from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\
Reboot the computer. The Found New Hardware wizard will open.
Select Install, highlight automatically locate software (Recommended). Click Next. The Found New Hardware wizard will prompt that it cannot install the hardware. Select Don’t prompt me again to install this software and then click Finish.
Open the RightFax Boardserver module, ensure your fax board is present and click OK.
